China South Closing The Doors

China South has been a fixture on the South Hill for quite some time, but will close its doors on Sunday, July 31.  The owner is elderly and business has been slow according to one employee at the restaurant. The owner has sold the property but is not disclosing who has purchased the property or what will be done with it.  Fourteen employees will lose their jobs come Sunday.

I-90 Auctions will be liquidating all of China South's signs, fixtures, equipment, supplies, heaters, coolers, artwork and even the red iron railings leading into the restaurant.  It appears as if the building will be completely stripped down, indicating that it will be torn down rather than remodeled. The auction will be held Friday, August 5.

The City of Spokane's Building Services and Nystrom+Olson Architecture completed  a pre-development conference for a new retail building planned for the property on July19.  A pre-development conference is held before a building permit is applied for.

Trader Joe's is being built in the same parking lot as China South and is sure to bring a lot of traffic to that area. A new business is sure to benefit from the added activity, especially if it is a business that has synergy with Trader Joe's.  Any guesses on what will take the place of China South?

  1. Hmmm...you know what Spokane needs? A Burgerville! Maybe you're familiar with this eco-friendly, socially conscious chain of drive thru burger joints out of Portland? Maybe give McD's next door a run for its money. But then again, Spokane has a ton of burger places...Unfortunately it'll probably end up being another half empty strip mall. :(
